Trip Summary
Upon arrival to the “City of Kings” you will have the opportunity to appreciate the food, culture, architecture and art in the capital of the World’s most diverse country. After a typical lunch visit the Archaeological Museum containing the best pieces of pre-Columbian art from the rich archaeological zones of Peru, followed by a visit to the Larco Gold Museum.
Heading south from Lima through the coastal desert, along the Pan American Highway towards Nazca you will visit Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, Peru's Galapagos, the Desert Oasis of Huacachina, a winery and overnight in the Agricultural centre of Ica famous for its Pisco. On a flight from Ica over the Nazca Lines you will see one of the most baffling enigmas of archaeology, geometrical figures etched into stony desert before driving back to Lima for your flight to Arequipa.
From the coastal desert you fly into the Andes Mountains to the "White City" of Arequipa, Alpaca Capital of the World. This beautiful city at 2000m is rimmed by three Volcanoes and home to the 16th-century Santa Catalina Convent, where the inhabitants have lived cut off from the outside world for more than 400 years. Here Alpaca industry visits and an evening with local industry representatives will be the starting point for your “Camelid Route” into the high Andes. Crossing the Pampa Cañahuas in the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, inhabited by herds of Vicuñas and Alpacas, you will arrive to the rim of world's deepest canyon, Colca Canyon. Bathe in the thermal springs before viewing condors in flight over the canyon. Taking a little travelled route you will make your way high into the Altiplano staying at Quimsachata Experimental Camelid Centre experiencing its diverse genetics. Stop at the ruins of Sillustani and visit local communities along the way to Puno.
Puno is located on the World’s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca. After a full day boat trip and night on the Lake you will set out through ancient Aymaran lands with local “Alpaceros” for 4 days. Starting with a Vicuña Chacu, this unique experience also includes visits to Rural Alianza, Macusani (Huacaya Alpacas), Nuñoa (Suri Alpacas), a judging course and visit to La Raya research Centre. From La Raya you will make your way to Cusco visiting Raqchi (Temple of the Wiracocha God) and Andahuaylillas (Sistine Chapel of Americas).
The Imperial City of Cusco, centre of the Incan empire is referred to as "the navel of the World". Here you will visit Incan ruins, take in 500 year old Spanish architecture and learn about the indigenous Quechua culture. From Cusco set out through stunning Andean scenery to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where you will visit colourful local markets and imposing Incan fortresses. You will have a chance to relax, visit the local community of Chichubamba, enjoy a delicious Pachamanca (traditional ground cooking) followed by a Incan Ceremony with an offering to Pacha Mama before setting off on the train to mystical Machu Picchu.
You will gracefully traverse through high-mountain desert, cloud forest, mountain passes and orchid-rich jungle on your way to "The Lost City of the Incas". No other place on Earth combines such spectacular natural beauty with such intrigue. After spending a night in the village you will rise early for a fully guided visit to the ruins and have plenty of free time to explore. Returning to the Sacred Valley you will be able to visit the Salt mines of Maras, ruins of Moray and Chinchero before returning to Cusco. Enjoy a free day in Cusco to explore and shop.
A short flight then sees you arriving to the town of Puerto Maldonado located in the southern part of the Peruvian Amazon basin. The lodge is about an hour’s canoe ride from Puerto Maldonado adjacent to the Tambopata National Park. A compact yet thorough excursion, featuring superb activities and explorations, that permits you to discover a wide diversity of ecosystems subsisting in the Amazon rainforest, and to explore the rich biodiversity within the Tambopata region. The wildlife is amazing, from giant and colorful parrots, to toucans, macaws, tapir, tamarin, owl, the gorgeous Southern Amazon Red Squirrel, as well as a large variety of monkeys.
A boat ride along the Madre Dios River and short flight sees you returning to Lima where you have the option of a City Tour or perhaps the opportunity for some last minute shopping in Miraflores. Overnight in Lima before departing Peru.
