The wildlife is Amazing
Programs vary depending on your time frame, intrests and the Lodge selected.
The southern Peruvian rainforest is one of the last easily accessible virgin tropical rainforests of the world. Considered by Conservation International as one of the global Mega Diversity Hot Spots, the region has remained intact because of the limited road access and the fact that it is home to several major National Parks: Manu, Candamo, Tambopata National Reserve, Amarakaeri and Bahuaja Sonene Reserve, with more than nine million protected acres (3.6 million hectares).
The wildlife is remarkable, from giant and colorful parrots, to toucans, macaws, tapir, jaguar, armadilo, caimen, giant otter, butterflies, fish, reptiles, tamarin, owl, as well as a large variety of monkeys and more.

Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, managed by the Native Community of Infierno. The two and a half hour boat ride, including boxed lunch, from the Tambopata Port to Refugio Amazonas will take us into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation unit. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. After dinner we will be out at the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas Lodge
Day 2 REFUGIO AMAZONAS / TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTRE After an early breakfast a few minutes hike from the lodge is a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades We will be demonstrating the whole process of the rain forest's only sustainably harvested product from collection through transportation to drying. Four and half hours by boat from Refugio Amazonas, in the pristine heart of the reserve, lies the Tambopata Research Center. One and half hours into our boat journey we will leave the final traces of human habitation behind. Within the 700,000 hectare uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent.
Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. A three to five kilometer hike will lead us to overlooks commanding magnificent views of the Tambopata winding its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerating on old bamboo forest, is good for Howler Monkey and Dusky Titi Monkey. After dinner scientists will provide an in depth look at the biology of macaws. Overnight at Tambopata Research Center.
Day 3 TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTRE At dawn discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, you will observe Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active. After returning to the lodge for breakfast you will walk the Floodplain Trail. This five kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees criss-crossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos we will look for Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. After lunch, replicating the daily work of macaw researchers, you will climb a 30 meter tree with a rope, harness and jumar. From this vantage point we will have a macaws eye view of the forest. This demanding exercise is perfectly safe and requires no previous experience. After dinner You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories. Overnight at Tambopata Research Center.
Day 4 TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTRE / REFUGIO AMAZONAS After breakfast and a few practice strokes with our kayaking guide, you will be ready to navigate the Tambopata River at a natural pace for a few hours. Wildlife sightings increase in quality as the silent kayaks do not intimidate. A three and a half hour boat ride with boxed Lunch brings us to Refugio Amazonas. A thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25 meter scaffolding canopy tower. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely. After dinner nightly lectures prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas cover conservation threats, opportunities and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.
Day 5 REFUGIO AMAZONAS After breakfast a boat ride and walk through the forest you will arrive to Oxbow Lake. Paddle around the lake on a canoe or a catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers, hoping to see the giant otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws, parrots and water birds. After lunch at the lodge its time for some fishing. The Quebrada Gato, a twenty minute boat ride from Refugio Amazonas, is the only creek in all the Tambopata basin that consistently offers the chance to catch dogfish, a fighter, as well as large catfish and other local species. Return to the lodge for dinner and relax to the sounds of the jungle for your last night at Refugio Amazonas.
Day 6 REFUGIO AMAZONAS / DEPART AMAZON After breakfast board the boat for your return down river to the port of Infierno. Change the engine for pedals and ride back to Puerto Maldonado on a mountain-bike. An early boat will take you to the Tambopata River Port in the Native Community of Infierno. From there you will bike back the 20 kilometers road to Puerto Maldonado, that has short slopes and presents little technical difficulty, but it will be hot and sweaty. At our Puerto Maldonado Office a shower will wait for you. Afterwards you will be driven to the airport. This activity is always subject to airline departure times.
Boat Transportation – boats are 20 foot long, roofed canoes with 55 hp outboard motors. Daily arrivals and departures from every port are scheduled to meet every airline arrival and departure.

Weather The lowland rainforests of Tambopata lie far enough south of the Equator to provide a cooler, drier winter season between May and October. The general weather conditions are warm and humid. In Tambopata the average daytime high temperature is between 24° and 31°C (78° and 93° F) and the average nighttime low is between 20° and 24°C (66° and 78° F). Nevertheless between May and September, cold fronts from Argentina can sweep into southwestern Amazonia and push daytime highs down to 9° C (50° F) and the nighttime lows to 5° C (43° F). Thus, during that season always be potentially prepared for cold and drizzle. During the rainy months of November through April, always be prepared for heavy rain that can continue for hours or days. Around 80% of the annual average 3000 mm rainfall occurs during this season. Lodges provide rubber boots to walk on the jungle trails free of charge.
Medical Yellow Fever Inoculation is recommended for travel to Tambopata.
Malaria is present but extremely rare. If you wish to take medical precautions against malaria consult your physician or a specialist in tropical medicine.
Leishmaniasis is present throughout the rainforests of southeastern Peru. It is a skin lesion caused by a protozoan transmitted by a certain kind of small biting fly. There is no vaccination against it but it is curable in every case. The selected cure, injections of pentavalent antimony (Glucantime), is uncomfortable. Leishmaniasis is also very easy to prevent by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and repellent on exposed skin at all times, and sleeping under mosquito nets. For a complete information on leishmaniasis contact us before your trip.
Emergencies: In case of emergencies we have a first aid kit that is equipped to deal with most cases that may reasonably arise in the area. Our guides are all certified by the Red Cross, which means they are prepared to deal with foreseeable emergencies (broken bones or snake bites, for example) but not complex emegerencies (such as an appendicitis). For snake bites, we have extractors and an anti-venom at the lodges. In case of evacuation, we need to travel by boat by to Puerto Maldonado. During the day, evacuations take about 20% less time than our regular boats. During the night, evacuations take about 30% more. In Puerto Maldonado there is access to a state clinic.
Gratuities You will find tip boxes at each of the lodges. These are for staff tips. We suggest $3 per person per day. To tip your guide, wait until the end of the trip, and do so personally. We suggest $10 per person per day.
The following activities are experienced during Amazon Jungle Tours
Amazon Gastronomy Visitors can learn from our cooks about the ingredients and processes involved in Amazon cooking.
Animal Foot prints Visitors search and identify animal footprints along the Amazon trails, having the chance to take home intact wax replicas of the footprints found.
Bird Watching The Madre de Dios Rainforest is home to more than 500 bird species. Visitors can spot around 180 species, both inside the rainforest or outside in beaches and rivers. Specialized guides with wide ornithology experience are available at the lodge, allowing birdwatchers to enjoy their hobby in one of the richest bird ecosystems on earth.
Discovering the Amazon Ecosystem The Amazon Rainforest encloses a wide array of ecosystems, each composed of specific water and land resources, particular weathers and diverse species. Travelers can explore part of this universe through trails, swamps, creeks and streams.
Flora Observation Visitors are able to discover the shapes and colors of orchids, heliconias and bromelias; the divine world of the “walking palm trees”; the smells of vanilla and the sacha ajo; the symbiosis between the tangarara tree and the “fire ant”; or the “battle” between the destroyer matapalo and immense trees. Our guides are perfectly qualified to resolve all visitors´ concerns.
Jungle Survival Skills Some of our most skilled local guides show the jungle through the eyes of a survivor. Guests can learn to use the longbow and the blowgun, to recognize which animals and plants are edible and to identify local sounds, among other techniques.
Native Styled Fishing Visitors have the chance to try and witness diverse Amazon fishing modes: using fishhooks and spears, nets and traps, or fishing bows and tarrajas.
Photography Visitors can look for picture opportunities in this photographic paradise.
Searching for Medicinal Plants Amazon foresters know more than 3000 plants with medicinal attributes from which they obtain resins, fruits, leaves, brews or essences. Many of these species have been incorporated to the western medicine in a variety of ways, and there is still plenty of research taking place. Visitors can accede to this knowledge, identifying oje, uña de gato, sangre de grado, and aphrodisiac cashapona aerial root, and even sample native medicinal plants.
Swimming in the Amazon Occasionally, travelers can carefully swim in the lukewarm waters of lakes and streams, at their own risk.
Star Gazing Visitors can discover the astounding southern sky from land station or while moving around the River, using our special equipment.
Tracking Ants This activity is about following and identifying different Amazon ant species and learning about their team-based working system, as well as understanding the importance of ants in the Amazon ecosystem.
Trail System Trail System includes clearly-cut trails and extends through the lodge’s surrounding rainforest, allowing an easier access to the various Amazon habitats: seasonably flooded forests and groves, Amazon palms, flooded groves, primary and secondary forests, among others. It is advisable to walk slowly and cautiously, as well as to amplify your senses to distinguish all surrounding views and sounds.
Rainforest by Night Venturing into the rainforest after dark enables visitors to listen to nocturnal forest sounds and spot Amazon species that only emerge at night, such as tarantulas, armadillos and even ocelots. A guide and a powerful flashlight are required.
AMPHIBIANS More than 60 amphibian species have been registered within the region, including a new species to science named Hyla Koechlini, discovered in 1986 by Mr. Duellman and Mr. Trueb from Kansas University.
ARACHNIDS The Tambopata Region, shares a high diversity of spiders (442 species), perhaps the highest in the Neotropical Region.
BIRDS Tambopata is home to more than 350 bird species. Some of them can only be observed in this area due to the diversity of ecosystems prevailing in the region.
BUTTERFLIES More than 300 butterfly species can be observed within the region, including rare species with very few specimens in other places of the world.
GASTROPODS More than 40 mollusk species have been recorded.
HOMOPTEROUS More than 300 homopterous species have been recorded within the reserves; the Cicadellidae family is the largest one with over 170 species.
MAMMALS The reserve is home to 136 mammal species, including 42 bat species, 22 rodent species and 8 carnivore species.
REPTILES Most snakes are more abundant from May to October, whereas lizards are more commonly observed from November to April. The reserve is home to 83 reptile species.
FLORA SPECIES More than 1000 flora species have been identified within the reserve grounds, including 400 tree species, orchids (80 species), araceaes (40 species), and beautiful bromelias and heliconias. Amongst the most impressive trees are Ceiba (50 m or 160 ft tall) and Lupuna (2 m or 6 ft wide).
These Amazon Tours are not physically demanding and provide an ideal mix of exploration, relaxation, and adventure in comfort. Good walking shoes and binoculars recommended.
