ABOUT AREQUIPA

Past

The region occupied by Arequipa today was originally inhabited by the "Huari" people during the 7th Century and later, during the 10th Century, by the "Tiahuanaco" culture - both of these periods being pre-Inca. Later, when the Inca Empire was at its apex, the legend has it that the Inca ruler, Mayta Capac, when he beheld the beauty of the región, told a group of his followers, "Ariquepay" (which means "you may stay" in quechua) - thus, Arequipa got its name. The Spanish Conquistadors arrived in Perú in early 1500 and, in 1540, Arequipa was officially founded by Captain Garci Manuel de Carbajal in what today is the San Lazaro district of the city.

Today

Arequipa is Peru's second largest city after Lima with a population of just under a million people - it is located in Southern Peru some 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) from the capital. Situated at 2,300 metres above sea level (7,000 feet) and constructed from white volcanic stone ("sillar") its buildings, with their distinctive colonial spanish architecture, reflect an all year round sunny climate and bean witness to its nickname, "The White City". Additionally you could test one of best cuisines worldwide. Arequipa’s cuisine has the same character as its people, strong and unforgettable. Its cuisine is full of exquisite flavors.

Climate

The Fiesta takes place during the Southern hemisphere's springtime and the visitor can expect plenty of unbroken sunshine with daytime temperatures of 25 °C (77°F) dropping down to 12 °C (54°F) at night. During the day it is recommended that casual (sport) attire be worn with hats, sunblock lotion and sunglasses being absolutely necessary. At night it is advisable to wear a sweater and/or a jacket.

Alpaca Fiesta 2011 EVENTS

Opening ceremony

A warm welcome to our participants and guests. A ceremony to remember with professional Peruvian dance groups, Wasi shows and, to end the night, fireworks, which will light up the city’s sky.

More than 700 alpacas from the best Peruvian ranches will be present in “Alpaca Fiesta 2011’s National Competition”. For the first time this competition will take place in two different show rings with separate categories for Whites, Colours and five age categories. Our assistants will be spectators to our breeders’ persistence and dedication.

The objective of our fashion show will be to promote all the different uses for alpaca fibre as well as to promote Arequipa’s architectural and historical places where, previously, the fashion shows took place in beautiful sites such as Santa Catalina Monastery (1997) and Los Claustros de la Compañía (2000). In this fashion show we will enjoy a variety of national and foreign designers’ collections.
